AC Milan's season so far

I have tried several times to write a post about how incredibly disastrous this year has been for AC Milan so far, but I just can't do it.

Match report: Genoa 1 - Milan 0

Due to concerns about possible fan violence, today's match between Genoa and Milan was played in front of an empty stadium. Genoa won 1-0. I believe, however, that Milan have officially clinched third place in the Serie A because of today's 1-1 tie between Palermo and Sampdoria.

Roma 1 - Sampdoria 2 (still)

Over and over again, I keep thinking about this game. If Roma had won, Inter would still be in second place.

Serie A update: Roma lose

Heading into last weekend, Roma were in first place, with a one point lead over Inter. On Saturday, Inter beat Atalanta to move back into first place. On Sunday, Roma played Sampdoria. They got out to a 1-0 lead, but then collapsed and lost 2-1. It was Roma's first Serie A loss in 25 games. After the game, Roma players could be seen crying (and Sampdoria players could be seen running around in their underwear). Roma are now in second place, and Sampdoria have moved into fourth, just ahead of Palermo (who beat third place Milan 3-1).

Match report: Sampdoria 2 - Milan 1

• Goals scored: Borriello 20', Cassano 54' (penalty), Pazzini 90+2'
• What happened: Sampdoria played better than Milan in the first half, but Milan was leading at halftime anyway. Early in the second half, Bonera brought down Cassano in the box, giving Sampdoria a penalty (and earning Bonera a red card). Down to ten men, Milan played much better for a while and had several chances to retake the lead-- Gattuso, Borriello, and Ronaldinho all came close. Then, at the very end, Sampdoria woke back up and pressured Milan until they finally scored the game-winning goal in stoppage time.
• What else happened today: Roma beat Lazio, so they are back in first place.
• Who Sampdoria's coach resembles: A cross between Peter Sellers, Jason Robards, and my mom's father.

• What this match teaches us: Milan has basically no chance to win the Scudetto this year.

• Goals scored: Borriello 2', Seedorf 21', Pato 23'
• What happened: The game was being broadcast at a time when I was not going to be home, so I decided to tape it using my video cassette recorder. Unfortunately, I forgot to rewind the tape. Fortunately, Milan scored all three of their goals early, so I was able to watch that part.
• What this match teaches us: Remember to rewind the VHS tape.

2009-2010 Serie A Update #1

After four weeks, two teams have won all their games and are tied for the top spot with 12 points- Sampdoria and Juventus. They are tied on goal difference, but Sampdoria have more total goals, so they are technically the number one club.

At the other end of the table, Atalanta have lost all four matches and have a total of zero points. They have managed to score one goal, however.

As for Milan, they are tied with four other clubs with 7 points. The optimist says that they are tied for fifth place, but the pessimist notices that they are really in eighth place.

Happy Birthday Wishes!

Happy birthday wishes to Vujadin Boskov - born on May 16, 1931. Boskov played professionally in Yugoslavia, Italy, and Switzerland, as well as for the Yugoslav national team. He is more famous as a coach - he has coached in many European countries, including Italy, the Netherlands, Spain (at Real Madrid), and as the manager of the Yugoslav national team. His greatest success came during the 1990-1991 season when he led Sampdoria to their only Scudetto.

Boskov is famous for his many quotations, including:

• "The game ends when the referee blows his whistle."
• "The team that wins the championship is the one with the most points."
• "It is better to lose 3-0 once than 1-0 three times."
