Notice that, if Milan had held on and won last Wednesday's game at Napoli, they would now be in fourth place.

As an added bonus, here are a couple of videos. The first one appears to be one of a series in which we get to watch a group of men watching Napoli games on television. In the second, we get to watch an announcer calling the same game. Again, there appears to be an entire series of these videos. The match is Napoli-Juventus from last season, I believe.

Match report: Napoli 2 - Milan 2

  • Goals scored: Inzaghi 2' (See photo above), Pato 6', Cigarini 90', Denis 90+3'
  • What happened: Milan scored twice inside of six minutes. They then became casual and careless. Both sides started committing lots of fouls. Napoli scored twice in the last five minutes-- tie game.
  • Milan players who left the game after ten minutes due to unspecified injuries: Nesta
  • Milan players sent off: Abate
  • Napoli strategy for the first ninety minutes: Appeal for penalties every time you get near the penalty area. Shoot the ball straight at Dida even if he is lying down in front of a wide open goal.
  • Napoli strategy for the last five minutes: Score goals.
  • Number of Milan goals correctly disallowed for offsides: Two-- one by Inzaghi and one by Borriello
  • What this match teaches us: It is not possible to kill off eighty-nine minutes of a game.
Above: Cigarini scores.

Below: Dida looks at the ball after Denis has headed it into the net to tie the score.
Below: Leonardo looks sad as he walks off the field after the match.

Another official announcement from AC Milan

Yesterday, Alessandro Nesta scored twice on headers to lead Milan to a 2-1 victory at Chievo. Today, AC Milan made this announcement on their website:

A.C. MILAN OFFICIAL NOTE

10/26/2009

MILAN - A.C. Milan communicate that the footballer Alessandro Nesta was subjected to the reduction of a small fracture in his nasal bones by dr. Paolo Marconi. The Rossoneri player will be regularly available for tomorrow's training, ahead of the match in Naples.

Above-- Nesta scores his second goal.

Match report: Chievo 1 - Milan 2

  • Goals scored: Pinzi 7', Nesta 81', Nesta 90+2'
  • What happened: For the third game in a row, Milan started out in a disorganized manner and gave up an early goal. They then spent the rest of the match desperately trying to catch up.
  • Nesta's first goal: Pirlo crossed the ball in. Borriello headed the ball off the cross bar. Nesta headed the rebound in past a bunch of defenders.
  • Dida's save: In the 91st minute, Milan goalkeeper Dida made a fantastic save on a header by Chievo. His body was going one way, and he had to reach out with his hand in the other direction to stop the shot.
  • Nesta's second goal: Not even a minute after Dida's save, Nesta scored another goal. This one was also a header (off a corner kick). Chievo had played quite well, but ultimately were unlucky.
  • Milan's jerseys: Milan wore jerseys I had never seen before-- all black with three red stripes running down the sleeves. They look just like their standard road jerseys, except in black instead of white.
  • Players who looked completely lost: Huntelaar
  • Defenders who came forward to attack over and over again: Oddo
  • Players who never get in the game anymore: Jankulovski
  • Amusing things about Pirlo: Early on in the match, he and a player from Chievo were laughing at the referee for making a bad call. Also, his captain's armband was white.
  • Best player for Chievo: Sorrentino (goalkeeper)
  • Chievo players who are Albanian: Bogdani
  • Chievo players who look like Ben Stiller: Pellissier (picture below in a previous match)

  • Where Milan stands in the Serie A table: Milan has 15 points, tying them with 4th place Palermo and 5th place Fiorentina. Since Milan is behind on goal differential, they are currently in 6th place.
  • What this match teaches us: When Milan play well, they may be difficult to beat.
Video highlights are below--

Liverpool - Manchester United: Red Card Report

Liverpool defeated Manchester United 2-0 today. During the course of the game, Manchester United fullback Nemanja Vidic (pictured below) was sent off with a red card. According to the announcers, this was the third consecutive Liverpool-Manchester United match in which Vidic has received a red card.
Later on in the match, Liverpool's Javier Mascherano (see photo below) received a red card as well. Apparently this was the first time in the last fifty-four Premier League matches that a Liverpool player has received a red card. Before today, the last Liverpool player to receive a red card was Javier Mascherano in a game against Manchester United.

Abandoned Books and/or Movies #5

Finn McCool's Football Club: The Birth, Death, and Resurrection of a Pub Soccer Team in the City of the Dead by Stephen Rea
Stephen Rea is from Northern Ireland. His wife is from North Carolina. In 2004 they moved to New Orleans. In New Orleans, Stephen Rea found a pub called Finn McCool's where he liked to hang out, drink, and watch European football matches on cable television. He and his friends there formed a soccer team of their own. Soon after that, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. After the hurricane was over, some of the members of the team moved back to New Orleans, began rebuilding, and reformed the team. Later, Stephen Rea wrote a book about the whole thing.
The book covers three areas:
  • Watching, talking about, and occasionally playing soccer; these parts of the book were boring.
  • Stephen Rea's views on U.S. life and culture; these parts were uninformed and often insulting.
  • Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath; these parts were interesting-- I tried to find and read most of them.
The Monkees: The Zany Adventures of Davy, Peter, Micky, and Mike -- Those Lovable and Wonderful Monkees by Gene Fawcette and Howard Liss

This book was published in 1966 for an original price of 50 cents. It is a comic book about the Monkees having adventures on a dude ranch, at a beauty contest, and battling corrupt Mexican inventors. For obvious reasons, I was unable to finish this book.

My AC Milan v. Real Madrid match commentary (first half)

Things to keep in mind while reading: 1. I take back every negative thing I said about Milan 2. Most of you will not find this post interesting at all

These are my actual comments (I wrote them down as I watched):
3:12- they say "Ronaldinho" differently here
3:15- Milan is already barely keeping the ball out
4:24- I actually like some of the other players on Real
4:50- Iker!! I forgot about him!
5:06- I haven't seen Pato's wife on TV here
5:20- this isn't the San Siro, is it? That's a shame...
5:33- They're new uniforms aren't that bad
6:00- Ronaldinho looked like he was trying so hard, but they took the ball so easily.... :(
6:27- I feel pessimistic
6:38- sometimes they call Ronaldinho "Ronaldo Gaucho" here, and "Gaucho" doesn't sound like you think it does
7:12- I'm not as nervous as I think I should be... :?
7:37- Nesta's back??!?!?!!?!
8:04- watching alone sucks...
8:17- remember how excited we were when Zambrotta came?
8:34- "Olha Kaká" - the announcer
8:52- Pirlo's hair is still really floppy
9:10- the other day, somebody quizzed me on my knowledge of Milan players (because of my shirt) and I passed.
10:05- Pirlo, was that a shot?
10:35- I can actually understand what the announcer is saying...!
11:11- Xabi Alonso plays for Madrid?
11:25- this Milan team is kinda old... but remember Maldini? Me too.
11:42- Saveeeee! Dida! :)
12:09- Why does Real always have the ball?
13:15- Zambrotta!!!?!?! How could you do that? You can't do that! That's a PK... cruddd.... :(
14:05- What a weird collar on Milán's uni... :?
14:10- magic spray!
14:40- Pato is the brown haired version of someone I know!
14:58- "Olha Kaka... Kaka... Kaka... Kaka... Kaka..."- announcer. Her must have said "Kaka" about 15 times in one minute :P
15:51- Xabi looks pink
16:04- they said "Galliani!"
16:45- I'm trying to see how Kaká relates to the "other" team...
17:00- nice cross by Seedorf!
17:57- How did you give that away Pato?
18:12- WHAT!?!?! NOOOOOOOOO!!! How did he let that bounce off!! DIDA!!?!?!?!?!?!?! WHAT!?!?!!??

31:58- hehe, this is the same broadcast as ESPN, I think! Because the "shot's on target" was in english
33:16- Nesta
33:37- I love how the Real fans whistle at Ronaldinho. Is this because of Barça, do you think?

40:44- was that a shot or a pass? It was terrible as either :/
41:18- Kaka has his sleeves rolled up
41:45- is this still the group stage? good.
42:42- too close... yikes..... argh
43:42- too close de novo! at least Dida didn't mess up this time...
44:31- Aghhhhhhhhhhh! Don't give up another goal before the half. do not!!!
45:00+0:07- One more minute...
45:00+0:27- Aghh! This is pathetic. Too close again!
45:00+0:59- Oh my Goddddd....

Half Time:
-I love the CL anthem! :)

-Nadal! Nadal is here! :)
-The Milan players in the tunnel look depressed...

45:56- Pato's so fast, but with the ball he looks lost.

46:44- ...and it starts again...
46:56- isn't Raúl old or something...?
47:57- they yellow dudes (security) on the side are all turned around to watch the game, haha

49:22- Pato...
49:30- "Olha Kaká!" - announcer
50:20- Dida! :) But who was the Milan player who totally missed...
50:43- a shot! :)
51:05- Can we try something? A full minute with a Real Madrid shot.
52:08- Who's hurt? I missed it...

50 minutes later-
I saw the game through a window of a bar on the way to Jump and Milan was still losing. I'm worried.... :(

Terrible Decisions/ Sacrifices

Sometimes in life, a person has to make a decision.
Sometimes in life, a person has to m ake sacrifices.

Maybe, as a hypothetical situation, there is an American girl who is a fan of the Italian soccer club AC Milan. Maybe she goes on a study abroad to Brazil and is missing an entire season of soccer. Maybe she hasn't seen a Milan game yet this season. So maybe she was hungry, so grabbed a jello, and (maybe because of her host families rules can only eat in the living room or kitchen, and the living room has a tv) she goes to watch tv. Maybe she turns on the TV two seconds before the kickoff of a Milan game, just by pure chance. Maybe it's a champions league game vs Real Madrid. And, if this were a real situation, of course she watched the first half avidly, biting her nails (figuratively) the entire game. But perhaps there were darker forces at work. Because, maybe, this girl has a class of Jump every weekday at 5:00 (jump is excercise on trampolines). And maybe, at 4:45/ halftime of the game, seeing that Milan were playing terribly and losing to the best team in Europe, she decided (after much indecision and wavering) to just go to jump and not be lazy. And so maybe she returns, and the game is already over. And maybe she decides to sleep instead of check the result of the game (because she was sure it would be negative). And maybe she goes to school the next day, and here's the boys in her class talking about the game. And she cannot quite understand what they're saying. But she is pretty sure she heard the words "3-2." And maybe she was really happy that Milan didn't lose by too much.
But maybe, the next day, when she goes to post the commentry she wrote in her journal as a surprise to her American father, she is the one who is surprise. Because maybe Milan was the winning team.

But, in this world, sometimes a person must make sacrifices. And, you know, that when you actually watch a game, your team doesn't win. And as much as she would have liked to see this amazing victory, she is happier that Milan won.

Match report: Real Madrid 2 - AC Milan 3

  • Goals scored: Raul 19', Pirlo 62', Pato 66', Drenthe 76', Pato 88'
  • Goals disallowed: Thiago Silva 86'
  • Raul's goal: Milan keeper Dida had just caught a soft shot. Then he brought it down and bounced it off his knee straight to Raul. Raul did not miss.
  • Why Dida was even playing: Dida started for the injured Storari. Storari had replaced the injured Abbiati. Abbiati had replaced the injured Dida.
  • Pirlo's goal: Pirlo shot from 35+ yards out. The ball grazed Iker Casillas' fingers but went in. The shot was so surprising that the television announcer did not realize that the ball had gone in the net. The Madrid home crowd did go instantly silent, however.
  • Pato's first goal: Ambrosini put a long pass in to Pato. Casillas rushed all the way out of the penalty area but could not get to the ball. Pato went around Casillas and did not miss. This was Pato's first ever Champions League goal.
  • Drenthe's goal: Madrid had many, many more corner kicks than Milan. This was one of them. Madrid took a short corner and Drenthe drilled it along the ground and into the net.
  • Thiago Silva's goal: Milan had a corner. Ronaldinho took it. Thiago Silva or a defender headed it in. The referee disallowed the goal for no apparent reason. Much yelling, pushing, and shoving followed.
  • Pato's second goal: Seedorf (who had an absolutely fantastic game) lobbed a short pass into Pato who was wide open on the right side of the box. Pato calmly volleyed it in.
  • What this match teaches us: I have absolutely no idea what this match teaches us. However, this may have been the most exciting, satisfying match I have ever seen.
Above: Thiago Silva celebrates the victory.

Pictures of the Day: more from Milan 2-- Roma 1

Above: Menez scores for Roma early on.
Above: Ronaldinho makes a penalty kick.

Above: Pato has taken the ball around the goalkeeper and is about to score.

Sunday, October 18, 2009

Match report: Milan 2 - Roma 1

  • Goals scored: Menez 3', Ronaldinho 57' (penalty), Pato 67'
  • Number of Milan players who made absolutely terrible, failed back passes to the keeper that resulted in Roma goals: 1 (Thiago Silva)
  • Number of Milan players sent off: 1 (Ambrosini)
  • Number of semi-dubious penalties awarded to Milan by referee Roberto Rosetti: 1 (Burdisso on Nesta)
  • Number of teams that did not deserve to win: 2 (AC Milan and AS Roma)
  • Number of loud explosions: 1
  • Where you might find Pato these days: Near midfield, over by the right touchline, making everybody wonder what in the world he is doing over there. Probably only Leonardo knows.
  • Place Milan are now in: 8th
  • What this match teaches us: Sometimes teams play badly and still manage to win.
  • Questions for further research: Does this team have any chance at all in Wednesday's Champions League match against Real Madrid?
For highlights, watch the video below:

The most entertaining team in college football

Last season the University of Washington Huskies football team went 0-12 and were truly terrible. This year they are 3-4 and playing well at times. More importantly, however, they are easily the most enjoyable and unpredictable football team in the entire country. Highlights so far include:
  • Beating USC 16-13 on a last second field goal. At the time, USC was ranked #3 in the country. (Click here for video.)
  • Losing to Notre Dame 37-30 in overtime. The Huskies should have won this game in regulation, but they failed to score late to put Notre Dame away.
  • Beating Arizona 36-33 on a late-game interception return for a touchdown. On the interception, the ball ricocheted off the wide receiver's foot and into the arms of the UW's Mason Foster (see photo above). (Click here for video.)
  • Losing to Arizona State 24-17 on a last second touchdown pass after failing to run out the clock and force overtime. (Click here for video.)
The Huskies still have five more Pac-Ten games left, all of which should be exciting. It is even possible that they might get invited to a post-season bowl game.

Pictures of the Day-- Darren Bent's goal

Sunderland beat Liverpool 1-0 at home earlier today. Sunderland's goal came on a shot by Darren Bent which deflected off a beach ball and/or defender on its way into the goal. Liverpool obviously claimed the goal should not have counted, but the referee did not agree. The beach ball, by the way, apparently had a Liverpool logo on it and was knocked onto the pitch by a Liverpool supporter.
For a more detailed report, click here.

Update--October 18, 2009: The official online Liverpool store has apparently now completely sold out of beach balls.

Going into the 9th inning, the Red Sox were leading 6-4. Boston reliever Jonathan Papelbon got the first two outs but then gave up three hits and two walks to allow the Angels to take the lead. Boston is now eliminated from the playoffs.

World Cup qualifying match: Mexico vs. El Salvador

Seven more teams (Italy, Mexico, Serbia, Chile, Ivory Coast, Germany, and Denmark) qualified today for the World Cup Finals in South Africa next year. This brings the number of teams who have made it to eighteen. Only one team, however, had to battle a massive swarm of bees in order to earn a spot.

After the bees were finally dispersed, Mexico beat El Salvador 4-1.

What I have been reading lately #37

Steak...Diana Ross: Diary of a Football Nobody by David McVay

David McVay played for Notts County as a young man in the mid-1970s. For much of the time, he kept a diary of what happened to him (mostly practicing football, playing football, and drinking with his teammates). After his football career ended, he became a reporter. In the early part of this decade, he decided to publish his journals. The result was this book, which I found to be quite enjoyable. One of my favorite parts was when he went to see The Exorcist and then was too scared to sleep for several nights.

For an interview with McVay about his book and his career, click here.

A bad night for St. Louis area sports fans

Last night was a rather terrible night for St. Louis area sports fans--
  • The Atlanta Thrashers beat the Blues 4-2 in the Blues' home opener;
  • An escalator at the Scottrade Center malfunctioned after the game and injured 13 fans;
  • Nebraska beat Mizzou 27-12 in football; and, of course,
  • The Cardinals lost.

Baseball Playoff Update #2

Above: The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrate their 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 2 of the National League Division series. Losing 2-1 with two outs in the 9th inning, the Dodgers came back to win after Cardinal outfielder Matt Holliday dropped what should have been the game ending fly ball. Holliday later told reporters that he lost the ball in the lights.

Prior to the 9th inning collapse, this posting was going to be all about how brilliant Adam Wainwright is.

Baseball Playoff Update #1

In Game 1 of the National League Division Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3. Here are the important statistics:
  • Number of runners left on base: 30 -- a new post-season record for a nine inning game
  • Number of times an inning ended with the bases loaded: 4 -- three times by the Dodgers
  • Number of walks: 13 -- including two intentional walks to Albert Pujols
  • Number of batters hit by pitch: 4 -- two for each team
  • Number of pitchers used: 12
  • Number of players who appeared and who also played for the Cardinals during the 2006 World Series: 5 --Chris Carpenter (pictured above), Yadier Molina, Albert Pujols, Ronnie Belliard (for the Dodgers), and Jeff Weaver (for the Dodgers-- he was the winning pitcher)
  • Inning during which the broadcast technical difficulties were the worst: 4th
  • Time of game: 3:54

An official announcement from AC Milan

After Milan's 1-1 tie versus Atalanta yesterday, rumors spread that the club had ordered players not to speak to the press. Today, the club made the following announcement:

A.C. MILAN OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

10/5/2009

AC Milan announces that it never stopped its members from doing interviews in yesterday's game at Bergamo and restate that both the assistant coach Mauro Tassotti and some players gave declarations which appeared in the media.

"Hockey ought to be sternly forbidden, as it is not only annoying but dangerous." Halifax Morning Sun, quoted in Michael McKinley's Hockey - A People's History
