Walking the length of Seattle (and back), part two

The second part of the Ape Canyon News Service expedition to walk the length of Seattle and back took place on Thursday, July 11, 2012 (to read about part one, click here). This leg of the walk began at the temporary world headquarters of Ape Canyon News Service near Seward Park-- we set off north along Seward Park Ave S (which subsequently became Wilson Ave S and then 50th Ave S) until we reached Lake Washington Blvd S, on which we walked until we came to the outskirts of downtown Leschi (at which point Lake Washington Blvd S is mysteriously renamed Lakeside Ave S).

Below: The starting line

Our original goal had been only to walk as far as I-90; however, we made such good time that we decided to go an additional half mile or so to get to Leschi.

Here are some important statistics about this portion of the expedition--
  • Start time-- 2:06 PM (by a strange coincidence, 206 is also our telephone area code)
  • End time-- 5:26 PM
  • Total time of walk-- 3 hours and 20 minutes (two minutes longer than part one of the walk)
  • Weather conditions-- warm/hot and sunny
  • Total distance traveled round-trip-- approximately 9.2 miles

Above: Alexandra standing in an abandoned tire near the start of our walk. It is unusual to find tires abandoned along this stretch of Wilson Ave S.

Below: A sign we found lying on the sidewalk, also on Wilson Ave S

Along the course of our walk, we encountered numerous people who we knew, including--
  • a grade school/high school classmate of Alexandra's who did not seem to notice us (too busy driving a car);
  • my ex-wife/Alexandra's mother (she honked and waved as she drove by);
  • a friend of some friends who was jogging (we exchanged hellos);
  • two former students who were at Mt. Baker beach (they didn't seem to notice us, which was fine by me);
  • the daughter of some friends of some friends (we made eye contact but no greetings were exchanged);
  • a different former student at Mt. Baker beach on the way back (I suspect he may have noticed me); and
  • a former instructional assistant at my daughter's elementary school who pulled her car over to ask if we were who she thought we were (we were).

In addition, we found a large bush that had one hollowed-out section with a mysterious photo inside. (see photo below-- click on the photo for a closer view)

One important step we took to improve our performance on this part of our expedition was to bring our own snacks rather than relying on purchasing food from local businesses. Alexandra made us trail mix which did an excellent job of providing us with energy for our walk. On the way back, we did stop at Cafe Vitta to buy Alexandra an iced coffee drink, however.

Below: We cross the finish line
Next up-- part three!!!!

Match report: Milan 1 - Fiorentina 0

  • Goals scored: Ronaldinho 77' (penalty)
  • What happened: Milan was awarded a somewhat problematic penalty. Ronaldinho scored on the kick. (See video below)

  • Why this win was important: Milan need to finish in third place in order to guarantee a spot in the Champions League next season. Fourth place may not be good enough, because if Inter fail to beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final (and not on penalties), then Serie A may lose its fourth Champions League spot. (See correction below)
  • Milan players who received red cards today: Ambrosini
  • Strange statistics cited by today's match commentator: According to the man on the television, today was Dida's 300th Serie A appearance in goal for Milan. In that time, Dida has allowed 2,423 goals. This would mean that Dida has allowed slightly more than 8 goals per game.
  • Strange things heard on today's broadcast: There are appeared to be a large group of children at today's match. They could be heard chanting things such as, "Milan! Milan! Milan!" or "Borriello! Borriello! Borriello!" (when Borriello momentarily appeared to have hurt his ankle). Even more strangely, they appeared to have brought some sort of annoying plastic horn with them to help them in their chants. Two of the other popular chants were, "Milan! Honk! Honk! Milan! Honk! Honk! Milan! Honk! Honk!" and "Milan! Honk! Honk! Honk! Milan! Honk! Honk! Honk! Milan! Honk! Honk! Honk!" At times it appeared that the adult Milan fans were cheering extra loud in an attempt to drown the children out.
  • What else happened in Serie A today: Roma beat Parma, to temporarily take back first place. Inter play Lazio tomorrow.
  • What this match teaches us: Milan's only goal-scoring strategy seems to be falling down in the hope of being awarded penalties. Sometimes it works.
Highlights are below:

Correction: I believe that this is not completely accurate. The reduction in Champions League spots apparently would not take effect until after next season. Milan have guaranteed themselves a spot in next year's Champions League no matter what.

What I have been reading lately #29

Asterisk: home runs, steroids, and the rush to judgment by David Ezra
David Ezra is a lawyer from southern California. In 2008, he wrote a book about Barry Bonds. His views about Barry Bonds are quite simple:

  • Just because Barry Bonds grew bigger and stronger over the years, it doesn't mean that he used steroids.

Ezra believes that there are other, more reasonable, explanations for the league-wide home run surge in the late 1990s and early 2000s:
  • improved workout regimens
  • maple bats
  • harder, smaller baseballs
  • elbow armor for batters
  • smaller ballparks
  • more teams/more bad pitchers
  • use of video for training
  • smaller strike zones
  • fewer inside pitches
I tend to agree with Ezra and his arguments. On the other hand, I have often had a soft spot for many of history's villains.

Milan 1 - Juventus 1

Milan tied Juventus 1-1 today, pretty much ending whatever incredibly remote chance there was that they could catch Inter and win this year's Scudetto.  The tie also means that Juventus still have their own (remote) chance of catching Milan for second place in Serie A.  Seedorf scored for Milan early in the second half, but then Iaquinta tied it up only a couple of minutes later.  The most important statistics are these, however:
  • Number of loud explosions set off by the fans during the match: 6.
  • Numbers of times Inzaghi was whistled for being offside: 4
