Serie A update: Massimo Moratti celebrates his birthday

Italian oil tycoon Massimo Moratti (pictured above) celebrated his 65th birthday today by traveling to Siena to watch the team he owns (Inter Milan) play against 19th place AC Siena. Inter needed either a win or a Roma tie/loss in order to win their fifth straight Serie A title. At one point in the second half, however, Roma were winning and Inter were still stuck in a goalless draw.

Luckily for Mr. Moratti, Diego Milito finally scored for Inter (see photo below) and Inter went on to win 1-0.

Below: Zanetti and Milito (right) celebrate the game's only goal

Above: Inter celebrate

Below: Inter coach Jose Mourinho waves his commemorative t-shirt. Up next for Inter-- the Champions League final against Bayern Munich

Some people might say, "Happy birthday, Massimo Moratti!" Those sorts of people might also enjoy watching the highlights below. Others wouldn't.

  • Goals scored: Campagnaro 13', Inzaghi 26'

  • Milan players who returned from injury to start today's match but were unable to finish the match due to injury: Pato

  • Ronaldinho's current age: 30 years old
  • Treatments commonly used by Serie A trainers to help injured players who are lying on the pitch: Pouring water on the affected area, spraying the affected area with magic spray, massage, slapping injured players lovingly but repeatedly in the face
  • Milan's place in the standings: Second, one point behind Inter
  • What this match teaches us: Milan are still in second place

Karim Benzema's Lamborghini

Real Madrid's Karim Benzema was out celebrating his birthday earlier this month on the island of La Reunion. At some point during the night, his car wound up crashed. Benzema may have been driving, or it may have been that his friend was driving while Benzema drove another car. There are suggestions that the two men may have been racing. For more information, click here. For a map to help you find La Reunion, see below.
For yet another video of people speaking French, watch the one below. Benzema is the guy in the tank top.

(Un)happy birthday, Thiago Silva

AC Milan defender Thiago Silva (above right) celebrates his 25th birthday today. Unfortunately, during practice at Milanello, he suffered what is being described as a "muscular strain to his right leg," and may miss the next three games (tomorrow, Sunday, and next Wednesday).

I have a Franklin Gutierrez bobblehead doll

Last night my wife, daughter, and I went to see the Seattle Mariners lose 9-0 to the Cleveland Indians. It was also Franklin Gutierrez Bobblehead Night (see picture, above). Earlier this week, Manny Ramirez hit a pinch-hit grand slam for the Dodgers at Manny Ramirez Bobblehead Night, and we were hoping for something similar from Franklin Gutierrez. It didn't happen, though-- he went 0-for-2 with a walk (see picture, below).
Gutierrez also tried, but failed, to catch a home run hit by Travis Haffner in the 7th inning. (see picture, below).
Also at the game were such celebrities as Flo Rida and members of the Everton FC squad, including Tim Cahill (below, holding the baseball), who has the same birthday as I do.

Facts you might not know about Kevin Appier

Here are some facts you might not know about Kevin Appier:

  • Kevin Appier was a right-handed pitcher for the Royals, Athletics, Mets, Angels, and Royals (again).
  • Kevin Appier pitched in the major leagues from 1989 to 2004.
  • Kevin Appier had a career record of 169-137 with an ERA of 3.74.
  • Kevin Appier's best season was probably 1993, when he went 18-8 with a 2.56 ERA for the Royals.
  • Kevin Appier made 5 postseason appearances with the Athletics and Angels, and his record was 0-2.
  • Kevin Appier was once traded for Mo Vaughn (2001).
  • Kevin Appier briefly attempted a comeback in 2006. He pitched for the Tacoma Rainiers, AAA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. During that time, I went to a Rainiers game and got to see Kevin Appier hanging out in the bullpen. According to the journal entry I made at the time-- "Tacoma won 1-0 --We mostly watched Kevin Appier in the bullpen-- spewing out sunflower seed shells, spitting large amounts of a clear fluid, leaning back, and once stamping his feet." (See photos below, taken by Jeremy, a friend of my step-brother Justin).

  • If you search on the internet, it is possible to find people who believe that Kevin Appier deserves to be in baseball's Hall of Fame.
  • Kevin Appier was born on December 6, 1967, the exact same day I was.

Happy Birthday Wishes!

Happy birthday wishes to Vujadin Boskov - born on May 16, 1931. Boskov played professionally in Yugoslavia, Italy, and Switzerland, as well as for the Yugoslav national team. He is more famous as a coach - he has coached in many European countries, including Italy, the Netherlands, Spain (at Real Madrid), and as the manager of the Yugoslav national team. His greatest success came during the 1990-1991 season when he led Sampdoria to their only Scudetto.

Boskov is famous for his many quotations, including:

  • "The game ends when the referee blows his whistle."
  • "The team that wins the championship is the one with the most points."
  • "It is better to lose 3-0 once than 1-0 three times."

Once again, from all of us here at Ape Canyon News Service, happy birthday, Vujadin!

Kaka' with his birthday cake

Happy Birthday Kaká!!!

Today is the 27th birthday of one of the most talented and most respected footballers in the game today. Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite's (aka Kaka') strong morals, brilliant scoring and playmaking on the field, and his adorable family make a place for Kaka' in all our hearts.

Kaka' may appear flawless now, but he was not had a simple life. In a middle class family from Brasilia, Brazil,  his life was never going to be difficult. Or so it seemed. In 2001, Kaka' had an accident diving into a pool and was paralyzed. This seemed to end his career before it really got going, and we never would know Kaka' as we do.

Luckily for the world, he made a full recovery and went on to a marvelous career filled with AC Milan, a FIFA World Player of the Year Award, a Golden Ball. He also married Caroline Celico and they now have a young son: Luca. Kaka's favorite drink is water and his favorite book is the bible. These favourites represent Kaka' perfectly, as the reliable, wholesome, brilliant, talented, and wonderful person he is. He is a true role-model.

Happy Birthday!

What I've Been reading lately

Well, actually I'm reading the same thing, but the book called to my attention two great things.

A) Vujadin Boskov was a coach from the '60's to about 8 years ago. He happens to share a birthday with me (he turned 77 on May 16th), but that's not why he's getting an honorable mention. He's mentioned because he's funny! Examples:

"Penalty is when referee blows the whistle."

"I think that, in order to score, we need to shoot."

"Ball to us, we play; ball to them, they play. "

"Better losing 4-0 than 5-0. "

B) there are websites (in Italian) devoted to criticising refs, like Bryan Moreno (who reffed the game Italy lost to South Korea). The websites have pictures like these:
